When people see pairs in Blackjack, their tendenacy is to want to split them.
Two 5's add up to 10. A ten is a great number to start out a Blackjack hand with and should never be split. In fact, if the dealer show 2 through 9, you should double down. If the dealer card is 10 through Ace, you should not double down.
