I have been a patient at a physiotherapy and acupuncture clinic for over two years. I turned to the clinic's resident acupuncturist after suffering from incapacitating migraines for over five years. Before I found my way to the clinic, I had been to numerous specialists, all of whom concluded there was nothing wrong with me, and whom advised me to reduce the stress in my life. As we all know, eliminating stress is virtually impossible! With a lack of other options, my family physician at the time prescribed two different medications. Neither of these were effective, and in fact, one of them made me so ill, I ended up in the emergency room. At my worst point, I was suffering from a headache at least five days a week, and at least one of these was a severe migraine. I was unaware of any other treatment options, so I ended up taking frequent doses of Tylenol #3, which is hard on your system.
Traditional Chinese Medicine was eventually brought to my attention through a family member. Since I had nothing left to lose, I headed to a nearby clinic who had a TCM practitioner on staff. Looking back, I wish I had known about it earlier because it has completely changed my life!
My acupuncturist set me up on a program including acupuncture and chinese herbs, and worked with me to devise a nutritional plan that helped maximize the efficacy of the treatment plan. Not only have my migraines and headaches been eradicated, but my overall health has improved. I am no longer living in anticipation of the next migraine, and my life is not dictated by pain and discomfort like it used to be.
As a full-time psychology student at the University of Toronto, my schedule is hectic to say the least. I am very aware of the effect stress can have on my body, and I know that if I want to be successful and healthy in the future, I have to take care of myself now. Taking time for my appointment, is one of the ways I can help myself. The staff at the clinic where I go are a special group of people. Their expert knowledge, professional demeanour, compassionate nature, and enthusiasm for their jobs, make me look forward to every visit. It is also comforting to know that I am under the care of individuals who are genuinely interested in my life, and who are concerned about my overall well-being.
I urge you to think about yourself- consider what it is that you need, and become an active participant in your health. TCM may just be the answer if you are suffering from migraines. My advice would be to at least give it a try. Also, take the time to do your research, and find a place to pursue treatment where you feel completely comfortable . I personally feel that if you have supportive people around you, your potential of success is heightened! Good luck!
