I recommend getting a second opinion on anything important affecting your health and well being.
Here are some exammples of things you should seek a second opinion on: major surgeries, an important diagnois such as cancer, even things such as the drilling of teeth for cavities and dental procedures such as root canals.
Second opinions are advantageous for a three primary reasons:
1) Second opinions can potentially detect a wrong diagnosis. For example, some people have received cancer treatment when they never had cancer and were incorrectly diagnosed - incorrect diagnoses do occur.
2) Some medical conditions are diagnosed correctly but the course of action is interpreted differently. Second opinions will confirm that you do in fact need the required treament.
Some medical conditions do not necessitate a medical procedure even though you may be recommended the procedure by your doctor. Some doctors and healthcare professionals jump to surgeries or medications which are not necessarily required. Another doctor may see things differently and tell you that you don't require the surgery or treatment.
Some dentists want to fill 'cavities' that don't need to be filled.
3) During the process of a second opinion, you may find you are more comfortable with the second doctor providing the necessary surgery or treatment.
Your health is the most important thing you have and it is certainly worth a second opinion for anything major that can affect it.
