I am a right-handed golfer and I had a bad slicing golf swing. The slice is the most common problem among amateur golfers. When a right handed golfer hits a slice, the result is the ball curves off very hard to the right and does not go very far. This is because you are not driving through the ball, instead you are moving the club head across the ball.
A slicing swing can result from a variety of causes but for me, it was caused by an outside in swing path. To picture this, try and see the following. Before I struck the ball, the head of by golf club was farther away from me than the ball was. After I hit the ball, the head of my golf club was closer to me than where ball was. I was coming from the outside in when hitting the ball instead of driving the club straight through the ball.
The cure for an outside in swing path is counter-intuitive and that is why it can be a problem for so long. The solution for me was to aim just slightly right. This is counter-intuitive because the problem is that the ball is going right in the first place. But by aiming right, you are actually forcing your body to come slightly from the inside out instead of outside in. This means that you drive through the ball instead of coming across the ball.
To help you aim slightly right, first picture a line from your ball straight down the fairway where you want to hit it. Now, picture a line from your ball to a point that is just slightly to the right of the line that was straight down the fairway. On your backswing and your downswing, aim the ball down this line that is right of your target. You will find your self driving through the ball instead of slicing it and you will actually be hitting the ball straighter and farther.
